Fairfield University ~ Some Hope for the Bastards – Frederick Gravel
Mar 22 @ 8:00 pm

Choreographer Frédérick Gravel returns to the Quick Center, taking the stage by storm with nine supercharged dancers and two musicians for a choreographic concert of downright corrosive energy. For the musically adventurous and visually attuned, Gravel offers a spectacle to savor— an unholy hybrid of the highbrow and the high-octane with musical references of rock, R&B, and even classical. The purpose of this new work? “To bring a little light to the world.” Gravel seeks to lift us above the twenty-four hour news cycle and impulsive Googling that leaves us more informed than ever, but feeling hopeless to make any meaningful change in the mountainous issues that plague us. Forget “a little light.” Frédérick Gravel ignites.

Girlfriend is a vibrant and tender coming of age musical duet from when flannel was the height of fashion and mix tapes were the language of love. It’s 1993 in small-town Nebraska during the summer between high school and whatever comes next, college-bound jock Mike and sensitive but awkward Will find themselves unexpectedly drawn to each other. In the rush of first-time love, the lines of friendship become blurred — it’s complicated. A vibrant coming of age story set to Matthew Sweet’s seminal pop rock album.

The war in Athens is over. Yet, even in the aftermath, the horrors continue as King Tereus assaults his sister-in-law Philomela in an act of passion. In a story of tragedy, empowerment, and triumph, Philomela and many female victims of the war use their experiences as a platform to speak out, an idea that led If We Were Birds to win the 2010 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play. Philomela’s and the other women’s stories strike a contemporary chord as a great number of women share their stories and speak for women’s rights.
